Comfrey is a deeply restorative botanical traditionally used in skin preparations for its soothing and regenerative properties. It is rich in allantoin, which supports skin cell renewal and helps calm irritation, dryness, and minor abrasions.

Douglas fir resin is different from sap, it is a protective substance the tree produces when injured. It forms a protective seal that helps keep out harmful fungus and bacteria while supporting the tree's own healing process. It can be used in the same way on our skin to create a protective, antimicrobial barrier. We only gather resin that has naturally dripped and hardened on the bark after a tree has been wounded, never injuring the tree or harvesting directly from its wound.

Traditionally, conifer resins have been used topically in salves due to their antimicrobial and skin-protective properties. Research shows they contain resin acids and aromatic compounds that help inhibit microbial growth and support wound healing and skin regeneration, while also forming a breathable occlusive layer that helps protect damaged skin and retain moisture.

Usnea is a lichen that contains usnic acid, known for antimicrobial activity against common skin bacteria, and has long been used externally in salves and oils to support wound healing and skin recovery. When infused into oil, it is valued for supporting minor cuts, irritated skin, and blemish-prone areas by helping reduce microbial overgrowth and calm inflammation.

Our Tallow Commitment

At Thaea Botanicals, we source grass-fed and finished tallow from small, regenerative family farms in the Comox Valley and surrounding areas. Supporting local farms allows us to prioritize environmental stewardship and animal welfare.

We render each batch in-house, low and slow, to preserve its natural nutrients and ensure exceptional quality. Choosing locally sourced tallow is not only nourishing for your skin, it’s a more sustainable choice for the planet.

Product Consistency

While I take great care to keep each batch of balm as consistent as possible, tallow is a natural ingredient and slight variations in texture can occur from batch to batch. Factors such as cattle breed, diet and forage quality, seasonal changes, climate etc. can all influence the final hardness and consistency of the rendered tallow.

Temperature also plays a role, if your balm becomes too cool it may feel slightly grainy, and if it becomes too warm it can soften or melt. This is completely normal for pure, minimally processed tallow and does not affect the quality, safety, or skin-loving benefits of the product.

A Gentle Reminder

Our products are lovingly handcrafted with natural, wildcrafted, and animal-based ingredients. While we pour care and knowledge into every jar, everyone’s skin is unique. We encourage you to patch test new products and discontinue use if irritation occurs.
